What is a Universal Power Cord?

Unlike normal power cords, universal cords can handle varying voltage levels. They usually come with other protection measures, such as surge protection.

Types of Universal Power Cords

1. IEC C13 and C14

The IEC C13 and C14 connectors are so common in ordinary electronics today that they are called kettle leads. 

The C13 connector is plugged into electrical devices such as computers and monitors. On the other end, the C14 connector connects to the power supply or wall outlet, referred to as the L6 connection. 

The configuration is known as a kettle lead. It offers a steady electrification connection to many appliances.

2. IEC C5 and C6 (Mickey Mouse Connector)

The IEC C5 and IEC C6 connectors are used in laptops, projectors, and some gaming consoles. The C5 connector is the most different, with a three-pronged structure resembling Mickey Mouse ears. This fun shape makes its identification as such easy. 

It connects safely to a dedicated C6 inlet to supply constant power. Together, they offer a stable link for many devices, making them a useful combination.

3. IEC C7 and C8 (Figure-8 Connector)

The IEC C7 and C8 connectors are used in lightweight appliances and computing gadgets. Such appliances include DVD players, game consoles, and selected printer products. 

Generally, as shown, the IEC C7 connector has two prongs inserted into the C8 inlet. This design favors disconnection and connection of the devices as and when required. It’s often used to supply energy to small and portable machines.

4. NEMA 5-15P and 5-15R

The two standardised plugs and receptacles are well-known in the United States and Canada. The 5-15P is the aperture that plugs into the current outlet. 

One type consists of two flat blades and a circular round pin. By definition, the 5-15R receives the plug. Both supply power to many home appliances.

5. UK Type G

The UK Type G plug is used in the United Kingdom and some other countries within the region. The base has three rectangular connections that form a triangle to ensure the stand is stable. 

These prongs are designed to plug into matching sockets. It is a common plug that has a fuse to ensure safety. This design keeps electrical mishaps at bay, making this design trustworthy for consumers

6. Europlug (Type C)

Europlug or Type C is an international plug that is well used throughout Europe. It consists of two circular electrodes for connecting it to various equipment available in the market. 

Because of this design, it is very suitable for a variety of outlets, specifically in Europe. That is because the Europlug is portable and simple to use. Some travellers consider it useful when they are in different countries in Europe.

7. Power Supply Adapters

Universal chargers are needed for many devices currently. They supply the right voltage and current for operation in any device. 

These adapters are usually characterized by connectors unique to particular appliances. For instance, most laptops have their own individual power cords and socket accouterments. 

This means that the particular device gets the correct power to use so that it does not get spoilt or work inefficiently.

8. Universal AC/DC Adapters

Universal AC/DC adapters are useful devices that power different appliances. They can work with different voltage levels, which makes them versatile.
